The Super OM 5E sits at the top of Ortofon's OM 5 range and is the version to reach for if you want the series at its best. It carries an elliptical diamond with an 8/18 µm tip profile, which sits deeper and more accurately in the groove than a spherical tip, so treble detail is finer, sibilance is cleaner and inner groove tracking holds together far better on busy passages. Output is 4 mV into a standard 47 kOhm MM input, and recommended tracking force is a light 1.75 g.
The Super models add real engineering over the base OM 5. Computer modelling was used to locate the natural pivot point of the generator and balance its oscillation, which lifts linearity and channel separation while cutting distortion. Split pole pins reduce magnetic losses at the top end and extend frequency response to 22 kHz with better phase linearity, and the Noryl body keeps the whole assembly rigid and resonance free. The removable weight-plate is still there, so the cartridge can drop to 2.5 g for low mass tonearms.
Key Features
- Elliptical diamond stylus with 8/18 µm tip profile
- Split pole pins reduce magnetic losses at treble
- Extended frequency response reaching 22 kHz, plus/minus 3 dB
- Improved linearity and 22 dB channel separation at 1 kHz
- Noryl body for high rigidity and resonance control
- Removable weight-plate drops cartridge mass to 2.5 g
- Light 1.75 g recommended tracking force, 1.5 to 2.0 g range
- 4 mV output works with any standard MM stage
- Interchangeable styli across the entire OM 5 range
- Standard half inch mount for top or bottom headshells
Why Consider the Ortofon Super OM 5E
This is the natural choice when your turntable is good enough to show the difference between a spherical and an elliptical stylus but you do not want to move up to a far costlier cartridge. The elliptical profile pulls out more of what is actually in the groove, particularly on strings, cymbals and vocals, while the lower tracking force and refined generator keep record wear and distortion down. Dynamic compliance of 20 µm/mN and the adjustable body mass mean it partners comfortably with the widest range of tonearms, including the low mass designs many entry and mid level decks use.
Ideal For
- Listeners upgrading from a spherical or conical cartridge
- Owners of low mass tonearms wanting a 2.5 g option
- Turntables with standard headshells or detachable cartridge mounts
- Anyone chasing cleaner treble and better inner groove tracking
- Vinyl collectors who value low record wear
