The Hegel D50 is Hegel's reference standalone DAC, nicknamed The Raven. It was awarded EISA DAC 2025-2026. The D50 supports AES/EBU, coaxial BNC, coaxial RCA, two optical, and USB inputs, with the USB capable of 32-bit/384kHz, DSD256 via DoP, and MQA 8x. Three dedicated master clocks handle timing with absolute precision: one for S/PDIF signals, and separate 48kHz and 44.1kHz clocks for USB. ProHiFi is an authorised Hegel dealer in India.
The power supply architecture uses two separate low-noise toroidal transformers, both shielded in thick steel and placed far from sensitive circuitry. One transformer powers the noisier digital processing and standby circuits. The other powers the sensitive analogue and digital components exclusively. Both outputs are additionally filtered. Advanced mains input filtering eliminates noise from the AC supply, and when connected to a grounded outlet, this filtering can even benefit other equipment on the same circuit.
The DAC chip is mounted on its own dedicated board elevated above the main PCB, reducing noise coupling and providing short, unobstructed signal paths. The AES/EBU input uses a unique RS422 receiver balanced by a transformer, handling both weak and strong signals without jitter or timing errors. Circuit board traces use rounded corners to minimise impedance drops and reduce radiation, a level of PCB design care more typical of precision instruments than consumer audio components.
EISA called it a D/A converter that prioritises a naturalistic, musical sound above obvious embellishment, noting it leverages Hegel's in-house expertise to further refine the technology with a focus on signal purity, and described it as potentially a Nordic classic in the making. SoundStage Hi-Fi reviewed it extensively. The Absolute Sound featured it on video. The Ear UK praised its musical message. HiFi+ called it outstanding. Area DVD Germany confirmed its exceptional performance. Over 20 publications across 12 countries have reviewed the D50 since launch.

Why Consider the Hegel D50
The D50 is the right choice for listeners who want Hegel's reference DAC engineering as a standalone component to feed any preamplifier or integrated amplifier. The three-clock architecture, dual transformer power supply, elevated DAC board, and transformer-balanced AES/EBU input are design decisions that address the root causes of jitter, noise, and interference at the source, rather than filtering them after the fact. EISA's recognition and over 20 independent reviews confirm that the result is a sound character Hegel describes as naturalistic and musical, and EISA called potentially a Nordic classic. Paired with the P30A and H30A, it forms the reference Hegel digital front end. Paired with any Hegel integrated amplifier, it adds a level of DAC performance that none of the built-in stages, however good, can match.
Ideal for
- Listeners wanting reference standalone DAC performance feeding any amplifier or preamplifier
- Systems with AES/EBU professional sources requiring transformer-balanced input
- DSD256 and 384kHz/32-bit listeners needing a high-resolution USB input
- Those who want a dedicated DAC that improves on the built-in stages of any Hegel integrated
- Hegel system owners pairing with the P30A or any integrated amplifier via balanced XLR
- Systems where mains noise is a concern and the D50's active input filtering benefits the whole circuit
