The Hegel P20 is Hegel's entry-level stereo preamplifier and the most affordable way into the Hegel separates line. It uses Silicon Germanium transistors and high-frequency components not originally designed for audio, applied in circuit topologies developed at Hegel's engineering team to achieve ultra-low distortion and a signal-to-noise ratio above 130dB in balanced mode. Inputs include one balanced XLR, four unbalanced RCA, and a dedicated Home Theatre bypass input for integration with a surround processor or AV receiver. Outputs include one balanced XLR, one unbalanced RCA, and one fixed-level recording output. The fully balanced circuit design carries from input to output, and the SNR above 130dB in balanced mode is higher than many reference-level preamplifiers at significantly greater cost.

The RC8 system remote control is milled from a single solid piece of aluminium with the same bead-blasted and anodised surface finish as the preamplifier, giving it a build quality that is immediately apparent in the hand. It controls volume, source selection, and mute, and is compatible with most other Hegel products in the range.

SoundStage Hi-Fi reviewed the P20 and concluded it outperformed their longtime reference Audio Research LS15 preamplifier in midrange accuracy and bass performance, noting it was more accurate without sounding thinner and delivered considerably more bass punch than the ARC with their B&W 801 speakers.
