The Marantz CD 70 is a CD player built around an upgraded high-performance DAC and Marantz's own HDAM-SA2 discrete circuitry. A front panel USB-A port extends it beyond discs, playing FLAC, WAV, AIFF, ALAC and DSD files from a drive, and a dedicated headphone amplifier with selectable gain and its own volume control makes it a complete source for headphone listening. Total harmonic distortion is 0.0016% with a signal to noise ratio of 110 dB and 100 dB of dynamic range.
Build details carry over from Marantz's higher models. A toroidal power transformer feeds separate rectifier circuits for the analogue and digital sections, the circuit layout is symmetric, and an additional metal plate strengthens the chassis. The DAC master clock design controls jitter, and a selectable filter allows the sound to be tailored to the disc. Outputs cover gold-plated RCA analogue plus optical and coaxial digital, with the digital output switchable off. A VFD display can be dimmed or turned off entirely, and the RC006PMCD remote is supplied.

Why Consider the Marantz CD 70
The CD 70 is built for a listener who still buys discs but also keeps files. The front USB port handles both lossless formats and DSD, so a single box covers a CD collection and a hard drive without a computer or a streamer in the system. The headphone stage is the other reason to choose it over a plain transport: it has its own amplifier with a selectable gain setting rather than an afterthought output tapped off the line stage, which means it drives higher impedance headphones properly. The toroidal transformer and separate rectifier circuits for the analogue and digital sections are the kind of engineering usually found further up the range, and the switchable digital output allows it to work as a transport into an external DAC later.
